Hello.
This is Vibe Plastic Surgery.
Among plastic surgery procedures, regardless of age or gender,
the nose is a highly demanded area.
However, since revision rhinoplasty is highly difficult
and can cause discomfort and side effects,
a bulbous nose should be properly corrected during the first surgery.

Let's take a closer look at which nose types are considered bulbous,
what the surgical methods are, and learn more
about bulbous nose rhinoplasty.
Types of Bulbous Noses

When the nose is flat and appears spread out
The nasal tip needs to project sufficiently,
but if it simply collapses weakly, it spreads to the sides.
This can make the nose look wider and give a bulbous impression.

When the skin and soft tissues are thick
This is commonly referred to as a "strawberry nose."
If you look closely at a strawberry, the pores are wide
and it looks like seeds are embedded in it.
If your nose gives off a similar impression,
you might consider it a bulbous nose.

When the cartilage itself is large and spread out
Visually, the nose lacks definition
and spreads left and right, giving a bulbous appearance.

When the alar (nostril wings) are wide on both sides
Because the nose looks flat and wide,
it can strongly resemble a bulbous nose.

Bulbous nose rhinoplasty varies
depending on the shape of the nose.
In cases where the nose itself is flat and spread out,
raising the nasal bridge and tip to visually gather them
can be a highly satisfying point of improvement.
When the skin and soft tissues are thick,
there is a limit to the correction.
If too much is removed just because the skin is thick,
it can actually look worse,
so avoiding excessive removal
can be more advantageous for the final result.
When the cartilage itself is large and spread out,
satisfaction is relatively high
and the results are often very good.
Simply gathering the cartilage and removing the wide parts
can make the nose look defined and sharp.
Among bulbous nose surgeries, this type shows relatively good improvement
and high satisfaction.
If you still feel that your nose looks spread out
even after bulbous nose rhinoplasty,
we recommend a surgery called "alar reduction."

Rather than choosing alar reduction
as your first surgery,
it is better to think of it as a highly conservative procedure
for the remaining width after the nasal tip
has been sufficiently elevated.

Among the side effects of bulbous nose rhinoplasty,
there are cases where the nose becomes even larger after surgery.
The skin and the underlying soft tissues
have well-developed blood vessels and are prone to bleeding.
If these areas are excessively removed to make them thinner,
new scar tissue (fibrosis) will fill the removed space.
Additionally, a lot of minor bleeding can occur.
If the surgery is completed without sufficient hemostasis,
the blood in that area can harden,
resulting in a firmer and larger nose.
Therefore, for bulbous nose rhinoplasty,
it is important to find a solution tailored to the cause,
so an individualized, custom surgical plan must be established and executed.

When the height is low
Simply increasing the height and gathering the tissues in the process
often brings visual changes and high satisfaction.
However, if the bulbous nose is already high
and the nose is so large that it cannot be raised further,
the surgery can be challenging.
As such, there are various types of bulbous noses,
and depending on how the surgery is performed and approached,
the results will inevitably differ.

That is why at Vibe Plastic Surgery,
to ensure satisfaction in bulbous nose rhinoplasty,
our representative director and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Yoo Young-moon,
approaches the procedure from various angles—including the nasal bridge, alar, and columella—
to establish and execute a harmonious design plan.
