Hello.
This is Vibe Plastic Surgery.
Cartilage commonly used in rhinoplasty includes
ear cartilage, autologous cartilage, and donated rib cartilage.
During consultations at our clinic, we often see patients
who only have negative perceptions about donated rib cartilage.
So today, we would like to explain
the pros and cons of donated rib cartilage.
What is Donated Rib Cartilage?
Literally, it refers to rib cartilage donated by a human.
After harvesting the rib cartilage from a human body,
it undergoes sufficient chemical processing
so that it can be safely implanted into the human body.
Because it has been thoroughly processed
to prevent any issues in your body,
the probability of causing immunological problems is almost zero.
Reasons for Using Donated Rib Cartilage
✔ When both ear cartilage and septal cartilage have been depleted due to multiple surgeries
✔ When the amount of septal cartilage is insufficient
✔ When the septal cartilage is deviated
✔ When both ear cartilage and septal cartilage are too weak
✔ When you do not want any scarring left on your own body
Many people think that using donated rib cartilage
will unconditionally lead to warping.
This is not true.
Since the surgery is performed by flattening the cartilage
after its deformation process is complete, you do not need to worry much.

Advantages of Donated Rib Cartilage
It has the advantage of being much larger and stronger
than ear cartilage and septal cartilage.
Also, when using autologous cartilage,
some patients worry about
scarring or physical issues, but with donated rib cartilage,
since the surgery is performed using donated cartilage,
there is no burden regarding scars.
In the case of rib cartilage, because it can be absorbed and is hard, carving it can be difficult,
and inflammation may occur compared to other autologous tissues.
However, to raise and lengthen a short nose,
surgery must be performed with hard rib cartilage
to achieve satisfactory results.

Are the Side Effects of Donated Rib Cartilage Severe?

In cases where the nose is raised excessively, if the patient smokes,
or in cases of multiple revision surgeries,
blood circulation disorders can occur,
which may slightly increase the probability of inflammation.
The absorption rate may also increase, causing the nasal tip to drop,
resulting in a shape different from what was expected.
However, in most cases, there are no problems
even when using donated rib cartilage.
That being said, if you undergo surgery that pushes beyond
your basic conditions,
or if you continue to smoke,
the probability of experiencing unwanted side effects
can increase, so you must be careful.

Because everyone's nasal condition and preferred features are different,
we cannot say that any one implant is the absolute best.
Therefore, to achieve satisfactory results,
you must understand your own needs
and find the appropriate surgical method
by having a sufficient consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon
before proceeding with the surgery.
