Understanding the Difference Between Ptosis Correction and Double Eyelid Surgery!
Learn the key differences between ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery, including surgical methods, recommended candidates, and important precautions.

Hello.
This is Vibe Plastic Surgery.
Recently, as remote work and online classes have increased,
many people are considering eye surgery to transform their image during this period.
Regardless of age or gender, most people prefer a kind and positive impression.
Therefore, many consider ptosis correction to resolve a fierce or blunt appearance.

Many people are confused about how double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction differ.
So today, let’s take a look at the differences between ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery.

Ptosis correction is a surgery that strengthens the muscle power used when opening the eyes,
allowing the eyes to look clearer and open more easily with the same amount of effort.

To put it simply, double eyelid surgery is a procedure that fixes the skin to the tarsal plate inside the eyelid.
For those with single eyelids, it changes the way the eye opens from a single fold into two creases.
Ptosis correction, on the other hand, directly pulls the eye-opening muscles
to make the eyes look more defined and easier to open.

Ptosis correction is recommended for:
- Those with weak eye-opening strength
- Those who use their forehead muscles to open their eyes
- Those whose eyes look sleepy
- Those who can only open their eyes halfway when their forehead is pressed down
In these cases, ptosis correction will provide the best results.

While it is ideal to get perfect results the first time,
if the correction is slightly insufficient, it can be supplemented later through re-correction.
However, if the eyes are made to open too wide due to ‘over-correction’,
it can be difficult to perform a revision surgery later.
Therefore, the most important thing to avoid in ptosis correction is ‘over-correction’.
In cases of mild over-correction, you can expect it to loosen slightly over time,
and some cases improve gradually. It is best to decide on a surgical plan after thorough consultation with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

There are two main layers of muscles that open the eye:
The muscle closer to the skin,
and the muscle closer to the inner conjunctiva.
These two layers have different roles and show slight differences in maintaining the strength to keep the eyes open.

In the incisional method, the approach is made through the skin,
so the surface muscle is accessed first.
You can think of this muscle as playing a major role in opening the eye.
Therefore, if the eye-opening strength is very weak, the incisional method allows for easier adjustment by first regulating the primary muscle responsible for opening the eye.

In the non-incisional method, the surgery is performed on the inner conjunctiva by flipping the eyelid.
This area contains a muscle called the ‘Muller’ muscle.
Since this method corrects the eye-opening strength by lightly tying this part, the correction is relatively simple and easy.
However, there may be limits if a large amount of correction is required, so it must be proceeded with after sufficient consultation with medical staff.

Surgery is possible for those whose eye-opening strength is significantly weaker on only one side,
but since many more factors must be considered, it should be handled through thorough consultation with medical experts.

Long-term use of colored contact lenses can act as a ‘sharp weapon’ that weakens the eye-opening muscles.
Also, the habit of frequently rubbing your eyes can weaken these muscles, so it is best to be careful.
